Got the Clown Mask But Don’t Forget The Clown Shoes

Everyone makes a big deal about clown masks.  People think that they can just buy a two-bit clown mask at “Party City”, find an old jacket, and they’ve got a Halloween costume.  They are missing a crucial component to pulling off an effective clown costume: the clown shoes.

If you want to dress as a clown for Halloween, or for any other holiday or event, finding a good clown mask is important.  A good clown mask prevents your having to tediously apply clown makeup.  Don’t just buy a plastic mask with a string holding it to your head, however.  Good clown masks are latex and go around your whole head.  They will often have a wig already attached, which means that you save money not having to buy a separate wig.  Good clown masks are also much less likely to rip, allowing you to keep your mask for the entire duration of whatever costume party you may be attending.  This is important because, without your clown mask, you’ll just look like a guy in an old suit.  You don’t want to have to explain your costume to everyone all night just because your cheap clown mask ripped.

Of course, the clown mask is only half of the equation.  The other important feature of a clown costume are the clown shoes.  Clown shoes are very big.  They are comically over-sized.  Most clown shoes are red with yellow laces, to further reinforce the wacky color scheme most clowns employ.  Each individual clown shoe is roughly two or three feet long, from heel to toe.  Of course, the interior is much smaller to accommodate a person’s feet.  The ends often have some kind of bell or buzzer in them, in case people step on a clown’s “toes”.  This produces the comical effect of a buzz or squeak going off when someone accidentally steps on a clown shoe.  In costume, the clown can also feign aggravation or physical distress at having his comically oversized feet stepped on.

If you want to dress as a clown for Halloween, you need a good clown mask and a good pair of clown shoes.  Both sides of the equation are of equal importance.  Without a good clown mask, you look like a guy in an old suit.  Without good clown shoes, the illusion isn’t complete and you just look lazy.  Both good clown masks and good clown shoes are fairly easy to find, and neither should be very expensive.  For a modest investment of time and money, you can pull of a great clown costume that will have everyone at your Halloween party jealous.
